Working From Home

Right now I have been working from home for approaching three years and I should say that I love most of it. Take today for instance…

I woke up sometime before 7AM. Not sure exactly, but it does not really matter… I woke up when I woke up, rather than having an alarm tell me when I needed to wake up. In the last six months I have probably only used my alarm a dozen times or so, mostly when I have to take flights. And even then I have usually woken up just before the alarm went off anyway.

Anyway this morning I got out of bed and came down to my office without getting changed, and checked my overnight email, and three WWW sites (www.smh.com.au, www.news.com.au and slashdot.org) before starting on my to-do list. For once, there was nothing in my email that actually required any attention than simply getting deleted. And I dont think there was even any spam there [Most of that tends to be filtered out automatically].

Then I did about an hours work for one of my clients – He wanted the work done by 8AM this morning. I took friday off to work on the plane. Saturday too, and I needed to work on a business proposal. By saturday night I was exhausted so I did not get a chance to do the work then. Yesterday I had church in the morning, interspersed with writing this report. Sunday afternoon I had about three hours of meetings followed by writing another report, but in this case I was paid handsomely for the job.

So that left writing the code until this morning. My schedule for the rest of the day:-
Teleconference on the first report; Reply to some email from the last week; Go to the Post Office and send some stuff, as well as verifying that no-one has sent a Valentines Day card; Do my tax (BAS and Personal), or at least feel guilty about not doing it today; do a powerpoint presentation for a potential client on why he should spend a lot of money with me; and finish some work for a courier company where they have paid me a lot of money and I still need to supply some of the goods, and all the profit has been spent….

What I miss about working from my home is having workmates. At least having workmates working next to me…
