There is an old Monty Python skit, well before my time, about the University of Wooloomooloo in Sydney and their Phillosophy department. Their new member of staff is asked to change his name since it caused too much confusion to the faculty. You see he was not called ‘Bruce’, but something like ‘Michael’. It was felt that by having a person not called ‘Bruce’ then the people would not know what was being talked about.
Well, I have had a couple of people over with the same name, and I should say it was rather confusing. I would one a question by name, and both would be wondering who I was asking. It got even worse when I was talking about another person who shared their name. I actually thought about using surnames but I did not think that it was slightly rude… I used to work with a couple called Peter and Lisa – and I can only guess how they coped with this type of thing [Actually I was once doing some site work with Lisa, and we had just used our ID’s to remove a significant amount of computer equipment from the site to be brought back to Sydney. After we were given our ID’s back after having them checked Lisa realised she had her husband’s ID, and no-one noticed. Oops.]
One of the peopel who came visiting was a friend I had not seen for about four years… It was great to catch up. What with work and the like we had not had a chance to meet up. We had a great time catching up… Time to get some more programming done…
