In the last week or so I have been looking for some type of network storage device… Basically a small server that only serves files. I need to extend my storage, but I really want to make all the storage a bit external to all the servers. I dont know quite why, but it seems like a good idea. The problem is working out exactly what I want.
Linksys have a device running Linux, but it actually does not have any HDD devices… You need to add your own USB HDD’s which is OK, but not idea. Then there is the Netgear SC101, which is more of a NAS (or Network Attached Storage) device. It attaches to a single machine, and many of the devices can act together. I was initially keen about using this device, until I realised that I would need to share it to other machines by passing through a server. But you can add two HDDs per device which is good.
There are a number of other server devices available, but most are single HDD devices… There must be dual devices out there but I have not seen any yet… I will continue to research, and report here when I know.
