Robots

I was reading the paper today, and just glanced at the movie showings. The animated movie ‘Robots’ is being presented in Digital at Fox Studios. Now, I have never actually seen a movie presented in digital at the cinemas, but from what I have heard the picture is fantastic.

You see, they use about 10 million individually controlled moving mirrors to get the image onto the screen – just like DLP video projectors. From what I have heard the results are as you would expect – since there is no film to degrade. All you need to worry about is a hard disk crash. And since RAID is probably being used a crash is going to be rare.

Photo of the Day

This is a photo of the Bryce Canyon area in Utah, USA from a few years back. From memory it was near Tropic, and was rather cold. Being in a desert, and having clear nights meant that it got VERY cold at night.

Music

Madonna’s ‘Into the Groove’ from her Immaculate Collection ‘Best Of’ CD. Now Elton John with ‘Song for guy’. I can remember learning to play some of this in year 7 or 8 music, probably on a glockenspeil. One of my regrets in life has been never learning to play – I love music so much, and I would enjoy being able to actually play the music. But alas, my life went in other directions, probably far more fulfilling for me. I am sure I would have been a mediocre musicians competing with great ones, but I am a very good engineer.

I have one friend who plays a Steinway and plays it very well – too well. And I know that even with a lifetime of practice I could not get to play that well. With music it is often easy to pick up a bad note. Just look at my typing, and convert that to music. Whereas my friend played for about ten minutes going seamlessly from ‘Porgy and Bess’ to some Bob Dylan, to Elton John and a tiny bit of Andrew Lloyd Webber. I may have got the exact artists wrong, but you get the idea.
