The BBC has a story on the history of the Atomic Clock. Also NIST in the USA has a timeline for atomic clocks. This is all for the 50th aniversary of the first accurate caesium atomic clock. Below is my photo of the first one from when I was in London last year…
One of my friends tried to desribe how this works once – he is a self deccribed ‘Time Freq’ pronounced Time Freak who runs probably the worlds only mailing list people interested in accurately measuring time. It was strange when we visited the Parkes Radiotelescope last year seeing him talk about his home frequency standard and comparing it to the one at parkes, and I must say that his home one compared quite well. I believe that John is to the level of one second in 25-50,000 years. Not bad for a corporate lawyer for a multi-national who only ‘plays’ at this.
Anyway I need to get going… The Navy want soem work done, and I promised it to them ASAP. Next week will be pretty busy so I had better do it now…
