Questions on Tracking

Radioactive Networks knows that you have a lot of questions, and we know that you need them answered before commiting to a large purchase. On this page we will attempt to answer some of these questions.

What sort of coverage can you provide?

This is one of those hard questions. And one of the answers to this is how much do you want to pay? There are satellite communication systems which will provide 100% world wide coverage instantly, at $0.50 per position report, or $4 for an SMS message. This does not suit most users, but is sometimes acceptable.

The systems that we suggest are tailored to our clients. We can use a mobile radio system if you have one, or if you wish to install one. We can use GSM and CDMA. Our systems are flexible so that we can use the technology which is most appropriate to you. There is also no reason why the different technologies can't be used together to provide an integrated system.

Do you provide WWW mapping?

Short Answer. No. We are able to place snapshots onto the WWW, but what we have found is that most clients find WWW mapping too slow for them - particularly if they are tracking a number of vehicles.

Our mapping software will allow javAPRS to be used over the net to view the location of the vehicles, but the mapping in this application is poor.

What sort of mapping do you provide?

We provide commercial maps purchased at consumer prices. This allows us to provide street level mapping of Sydney for under $200. By using OziExplorer for mapping, we are able to leverage that applocation for maps.

Unlike many systems, you can add your own maps at any time. It is as simple as getting an electronic copy of the map, and referencing the map to the correct coordinates.

I need a special feature in the software. Can you do it?

We usually can. There are times when we believe that it will be too expensive, or will not work how it needs to - so we may suggest a different solution, but we will provide any features you need. Nothing is too hard for us. Through our extensive industry contacts we are able to outsource any parts of the work to external organisations as required.

What happens if you go out of business?

This is a big concern that should be asked of all suppliers. We have full control over our source code, and are able to enter into a code escrow arangement so that you are protected if I am unable to support the product for whatever reason.

I saw a nice PDA with colour screen, messaging and tracking. Why not use it?

It is your choice of course, but you need to think about what you are getting. A PDA is a great device for the office. It is not designed to sit in a vehicle all day. It is also not designed to be operated whilst the vehicle is moving, and nor is it integrated.

Can I track where other vehicles are on a screen

We dont currently offer this option with the terminal shown here. We will interface to a commercial GPS receiver allowing almost any number of other vehicles to be tracked in real time.
