Darryl Smith, B.E., VK2TDS

Owner of Radioactive Networks, Darryl Smith, holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Technology, Sydney. But that is not his only qualification. He also holds a Certificate II in Telecommunications Cabling, and is a Registered Cabler. He holds numerous other licenses and certifications.

Darryl is a true all-rounder with a unique set of theoretical and practical knowledge. Not only can he do the design work, he can do the construction and installation.

Darryl first experimented with wireless networks and Internet of Things technologies in the mid-1990’s

Whilst working for other companies, he has worked on a number of really interesting projects.

In 2022 Darryl worked for a large part of the year as an RF Engineer in the small RF Department on a soon to be released major ‘Hollywood’ film. During this time, he was working with the rest of the team to provide long distance microwave links from moving vehicles and then upload these images via redundant satellite links to other parts of the production.

Darryl enjoys flying and has been involved with aircraft construction for many years. He assisted one of his friends building their own aircraft and has spent a lot of time as a passenger on trips. He has done a lot of flight training but has yet to get his flying license.

Working with another company, he works to install and maintain ground to air radio communications systems for airlines.

In the past, he has operated as owners engineer for the installation of a Distributed Antenna System-DAS for In Building Coverage-IBC for mobile phone coverage within a data centre.

He has also worked to maintain the AM & FM Radio Rebroadcast System in a number of Sydney’s motorway tunnels.

In his spare time, Darryl has a number of hobbies.

Darryl has been a licensed Ham Radio operator for over thirty years, originally receiving his license when he was at university. He got into the hobby to experiment with digital communications. Recently he started experimenting with HF communications, and is loving that. He holds the callsign VK2TDS.

Darryl also enjoys distance running. Saturday Mornings will usually find him at his local 5KM parkrun. Sunday morning will generally involve a much longer run, often on a trail somewhere, or with his local jogging club. He has competed in a number of marathons and an ultra-marathon.
