Our Setup

The Radioactive Networks wireless setup is pretty simple. Our deployment of wireless is in direct proportion to our needs. With a very limited number of roaming clients, Radioactive Networks does not have a business need to extend it's wireless network past having a single base station.

We have deployed a Linksys WAP-11 Ethernet Wireless Access Point which will allow maximum equipment re-use when we want to expand this network at some point in the future.

Whilst the WAP-11 supports WEP encryption, Radioactive Networks does not rely on this for our security. We feel that any traffic that goes over a wireless network might be examined by hackers. For this reason we have dedicated seperate port on our firewall for 802.11 traffic. This allows us to tightly control the traffic that appears on this link.

For example we may decide to allow TELNET inside our network, but SSH is required on the wireless link.

On the client side we use a number of different cards - mainly from D-LINK and ICOM. Of all the cards, the D-LINK USB cars is the best because of the antenna on this unit. This allows the best signal to be obtained leading to faster speeds
