Linksys WAP11 AP

From http://www.maokhian.com/wireless/wap11.html

Depleting usable bandwidth since April 30, 2000

Dirty WAP11

Here are some lab results of the WAP11 hack. For those who don't know, WAP11 hack refers to a simple hack that increases the power output of device from 30mW to about 100mW.

WAP11 at 30mW power

Above we see a stock WAP11 poking along at ~30mW. This carrier is about 22MHz wide. Notice the large center carrier and sidebands down at the bottom. Nice and clean.

WAP11 after 100mW modification

After the "100mW Hack" was applied, we notice a drastic difference. Instead of taking a mere 22MHz, it gobbles up the entire band. Not only did this kill throughput on other AP's in our tests, it entered into the ham band on the left of the dial, and MMDS on the right of the dial. If the WAP11 was moved from channel 6 to channel 1 or 11, this would make the problem even worse. Also, nasty spurs and harmonics were detected in random locations from 1.4GHz to 2.8GHz. An exact frequency list will be posted in the next day or two. Anyone remember the BA1404? ;-) I think we have a tie.

Besides violating FCC regulations, a lot of the WAP11's power is wasted when it is scattered all over the band. Idealy, we would want as much energy as possible in our main carrier.

Cisco 352 at 100mW

Just to be fair, we compared a Cisco 352 100mW card under the same test conditions. Notice the sidebands are a little bit larger, but our signal is still tight and clean.

(In order to make things more visible, both 100mW readings were made with an attenuated input, while the 30mW reading was not. This does not change test results, and actually puts the 30mW signal under more scrutiny)

UPDATE 2/4/2002

Hi Casey, nice pictures. Is there any chance you could take
one with a different CR31 setting? Someone who was using the
hack before it was public knowledge recently posted to bawug
recommending CR31=90 not 80.

Thanks for the info Stu. I will run a test of this setting in the next couple of days.
