Integrated Cabling

The modern home is becoming filled with computers, telephones, televisions, internet and Cable TV. Computers are appearing in childrens bedrooms with televisions and telephones. The problem is connecting all this equipment up - in a way that is logical and future proof.

The solution is to install an integrated cabling system. In an Integrated Cabling System, all wiring connects back to a central location where it can be 'patched' as required. Each major room would have a couple of Cat-5 data & telephone cables, with a TV coax cable feeding back to the central point, known as a 'Patch Panel'.

Each room has generic sockets for phones and data (Computers). The decision what to use each socket for is left up to the home owner. They just need to visit the 'Patch Panel' and plug in cables activating each port. This really is very easy, and no training is required. It is just as easy to remove a patch as needed too - for instance if a child is being punished by loosing the phone in their room, or internet access.

The idea is to put the cable all in at once, and work out how to use it later. The cable itself is very cheap, and it is inexpensive when it is installed all at once.

People who are building or doing renovations should carefully think about installing some type of structured cabling system. Not only does it simplify changing things in the future, it has the potential to add thousands to the resale value of the house.
